Though we pride ourselves here at UK Bingo News on bringing you the latest promotions, offers and news of big wins from the bingo world, occasionally (but thankfully, rarely) we have to report matters that leave a slightly bitter taste. Unfortunately, this is one of those reports as a bingo winner from Yorkshire has found herself facing bankruptcy in a truly bizarre ‘riches to rags’ story. The gamer who is a single mum from Potternewton won a mind-blowing bingo jackpot of £50,000 just over a year ago at her local bingo hall and unbelievably, today she faces eviction from her home.
In what serves as a warning to all lucky gamers, 33 year old Cheryl McCann who is a mother of three is now so broke that she has to borrow money from her mother and cannot afford to send her children to school. She has also been denied benefits as the Work and Pension department believe she has been irresponsible with her winnings. Says Cheryl on her current predicament, “I don’t have a penny left. I just don’t know what to do, I’m so desperate. Some days I can’t send the kids to school because I don’t have the money for lunch and they can’t get free school meals.”
A Department of Work and Pensions spokesman has said that Cheryl has the right to appeal their decision. “While we accept reasonable spending of savings or similar resources when calculating entitlement to means-tested benefits, we have to be sure the taxpayer is not being asked to pay someone who has deliberately spent money or used up resources that could have provided an alternative income.” An unfortunate lesson for us all. Though a big win can certainly leave you delirious, it’s important not to loose your heads folks.
