Traditional bingo calls have been an important aspect of bingo since the early days of the game. Each number from 1-90 has been attributed with one or more calls as a way of reinforcing to bingo players which number has been called. The most famous calls include Two Little Ducks – 22, Two Fat Ladies – 88 and Legs 11. Interestingly, all three of these calls have been assigned their particular names due to the shape that the numbers make.

Other bingo calls have more obscure origins, such as the call for number 9 – Doctor’s Orders. This call originates from the laxative that was prescribed to soldiers in World War II which was named the number 9 pill. The call for number 26 is Bed and Breakfast. This applies to a time when bed and breakfast used to cost 2 shillings and sixpence – a little outdated but perhaps not for long if the recession continues!

You may have noticed that some bingo calls are a little outdated, with references to the war and old currency. Many bingo players like the sense of tradition that the old calls provide and they are a reminder of the good old days of bingo. For newer players though, who have just been introduced to the phenomenon of bingo, and particularly online bingo, the calls don’t always apply to their modern lives. Many young people won’t know who Danny La Rue (52) is!

Now, we don’t want to get rid of bingo calls altogether! They are an integral part of bingo game play, and even though they’re not specifically needed anymore in online bingo, they are still widely used by players at home who like to shout out each call! Bingo calls have now been updated for the 21st century by important bigwigs at University College, Northampton. The new calls include Vindaloo replacing Danny La Rue for 52 and Jimmy Choo at number 32. JLO’s bum also features at 71.

Here at UK bingo news, we’re not sure whether the new calls will rub off on the new breed of bingo players and we’re a bunch of sticklers for the traditional approach. Having said that, why not make up your own bingo calls that apply to your family and friends and make bingo an activity that will give you the giggles when you shout out: ’32 – Hubby’s stinky shoe!’
