Great Yarmouth council have called for its residents to make suggestions for the future use of the old St George’s Chapel which is to be refurbished. The 18th Century building will be preserved and restored but it won’t return to its original glory as a place of worship. Instead, the residents of the borough have had their say as to what to do with the building.

Culture manager Marie Hartley called for people of all walks of life in the area to attend a meeting to discuss what would happen to the old building. In an attempt to get as many people involved as possible, she said: “We want a wide range of groups to attend to explain what they need and how St George’s Chapel could help them to provide space to work or exhibit, or even if they have more exciting concepts. We are asking our creative people to be just that.”

An unexpected outcome from the meeting was a suggestion that the chapel be painted bright pink and turned into a strip club! Luckily for bingo fans in Yarmouth, the chapel will be turned into a multi-functional community arts centre, where loads of activities including bingo are set to take place!

The centre will be home to arts projects, encouraging young people to get involved in their community and will show films and theatre performances. The £8 million project is set to make Great Yarmouth a forward-thinking place to be!

If the suggestions that the chapel will be home to a bit of bingo action are approved, it might lead to more people flocking to land-based bingo and getting involved in the age old institution that is bingo! It will hopefully lead to even more firm friendships being formed as a result of bingo playing! The chapel is likely to be an environment that, with that massive cash injection, is a brilliant place to be and maybe even a little bit lucky!
